“The validation of GIGAGREEN’s innovative solutions at pilot-scale level is especially relevant in current circumstances in which Europe is attempting to build its own homegrown battery industry”

Interview with Jasmin Smajic, Cell Design and Development Engineer at Avesta Battery & Energy Engineering (ABEE)

What is the importance of scaling up the cell manufacturing processes?

The battery industry is suffering from a chasm between laboratory-scale innovation and scaled-up battery production. Many innovative solutions from the laboratory-scale are not seen in the market because their initial design rarely takes mass production into consideration. Moreover, laboratory conditions cannot predict the viability of the mass production of batteries. Industrial production, on the other hand, focuses on optimized tradeoffs between quality, throughput, and costs. Therefore, a paradigm shift in battery development is necessary.

How is GIGAGREEN going to achieve that?

GIGAGREEN has set out to do exactly that, by validating its own innovative solutions at a pilot-scale production level. By linking laboratory and industrial battery production with such an intermediate step, foundations are set for an integrated approach in battery innovation and production.

This is especially relevant in current circumstances in which Europe is attempting to build its own homegrown battery industry and to serve the continent’s electrification needs.
